New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre Joined Waitress
Being a member of “uber-boy band” New Kids on the Block, Joey McIntyre was often restricted to the role of “blue-eyed heartthrob and falsetto-voiced baby of the group.” However, since his victorious performance in New Kids on the Block, McIntyre has expanded his portfolio significantly by means of Broadway performances and musical theater.
Over the past 20 years, celebrity appearances in Broadway shows have become common routine, but McIntyre’s dedication to theater is still far from “common.” He performed as Fiyero in Wicked, following role inventor Norbert Leo Butz, and has also performed “off-Broadway” in Los Angeles when he played in Jonathan Larson’s Tick…tick…BOOM! There was also his “not-Broadway-at-all” performance in Cabaret in Alaska. Most recently, he was seen in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the Garry Marshall Theatre.
Currently, after moving to New York, McIntyre is hoping to make more frequent appearances in theater. And he’s kicking off big time!
On Feb 4th, he started performing as Dr. Pomatter, the OB-GYN love interest of protagonist Jenna in Sara Bareilles’ hit musical Waitress. McIntyre called in to The Billboard on Broadway in the midst of a hustle and bustle of rehearsals and podcasts to chat with host Rebecca Milzoff about the types of roles that he’s dying to play in the future, following his return to Broadway after more than a decade of performing at faraway places.
